Conventional carotid artery surgery (CEA) vs minimally invasive carotid stenting (CAS)? Which to choose?

Please read below the comparison

Both are effective ways to treat the symptomatic carotid artery disease.

Kindly consult with your doctor who can assist you in making informed decision.

How stenting is done without surgery? Let’s see steps of CAS

  • A small tube (sheath) is placed into the artery.
  • Contrast material is injected into the carotid artery through the catheter.
  • A filter is placed in the artery.
  • The balloon tip is threaded into the narrowed area and inflated to push the plaque to the side and widen the vessel.
  • A small metal mesh tube (stent) may be placed in the newly opened vessel. The expanded stent provides support that helps prevent the artery from narrowing again.
  • The filter, sheath, catheter, and balloon are removed.
  • You won’t have stitches, but a dressing is applied to cover the small incision site.

Common Questions About the Carotid angioplasty & Stenting Procedure

01

Will I be awake during the procedure?

Yes. You will awake and conscious during the entire procedure. The doctor will use a local anesthetic to numb the catheter insertion site.
02

How long does the procedure last?

The cath lab procedure usually lasts about 1 to 2 hours, but the preparation and recovery time add several hours.
03

What are the risks of the procedure?

Feel free to discuss with Dr Prashant Pote about the possible specific risks and potential benefits of the procedure with you. The risks vary, depending on the severity of your disease, location of the blockage, whether you’ve had a previous stroke and the presence of other medical conditions.
04

Why might I need carotid angioplasty and stenting?

If you have mild carotid artery stenosis, your doctor may give you medicines to reduce your risk of stroke. If you have more severe blockage, your doctor is more likely to advise a procedure to open the artery. Your doctor is also more likely to recommend a procedure if you have already had a stroke or mini-stroke. A mini-stroke is also known as a transient ischemic attack (TIA).
